A tough strong safety from Missoula, Bob Banaugh was a tremendous player for the Bobcats during a difficult time in Bobcat history
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football season, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here and a directory here.
Bob Banaugh, S, 1969-71
ALL-TIME TEAM: None
HONORS: Honorable Mention All-America in 1971, 1st Team All-Big Sky in 1970 and 1971
A CLOSER LOOK: Bob Banaugh came to Montana State as a walk-on defensive back from Missoula Loyola in 1968 and as a sophomored locked down a starting safety job. His enjoyed only five victories in his three seasons at Montana State, one in the conference, but he was among the several legendary Bobcats on those squads. He intercepted two passes in 1969, two more in 1970 (returning one for a touchdown), and picked off a remarkable eight passes as a senior in 1971, believed to be a school record to that point. Banaugh was drafted in the 12th round by the Minnesota Vikings in 1972.
FROM FORMER BOBCAT QUARTERBACK AND ASSISTANT COACH DENNIS ERICKSON: "Bob was a freshman my senior year and then I coached a couple years when he was playing, and he turned out to be really special. He was a great player, a leader of our defense, a strong safety who was physical and tough. He played in the league for the Vikings, and was just a really good player for us."
