Montana State Heads into Sonny Holland Classic on Saturday

Bobcat spring scrimmage kicks off at 1 pm
BOZEMAN, Montana – As Montana State closes its 2022 spring football drills with Saturday's Sonny Holland Spring Classic in Bobcat Stadium, it's impossible for Brent Vigen's mind not to drift back a year.
"Just a lot more familiarity, a lot more confidence," MSU's second-year football coach says of the difference between the 2021 Sonny Holland Spring Scrimmage and this year's. A year ago Vigen had never worked as a head football coach at any level, and his team – as talented and experienced as it was – hadn't played a football game since December, 2019.
Montana State closes spring ball on Saturday with the traditional Sonny Holland Spring Classic. The team's spring scrimmage begins at 1 pm, spans four 12-minute quarters, and should conclude by 3 pm. The event airs on 1450 AM in Bozeman, and on SWX and ESPN+
This year's Bobcats navigated spring drills without a vast amount of the star power that led Montana State to the FCS National Championship Game just over three months ago. Troy Andersen and Daniel Hardy and Amandre Williams are gone from the defense. Offensive stars Lance McCutcheon and Lewis Kidd also depart. And that's just the tip of the spear.
Vigen, though, is pleased with the work his team has accomplished. "I think we've taken a step forward," he said. "There's more familiarity with the systems on offense and defense. Having experience (at quarterback) is a positive. We have a lot of experienced guys that aren't (participating) this spring so the younger guys benefit from those reps. It's great experience for them."
After Saturday, the Bobcats begin summer workouts in early June, and then preseason camp begins in early August.
