GAME #10: Montana State's Regular Season Road Finale Pits Top Big Sky Ground Game Against Cal Poly's Aerial Assault
11/9/2022 12:20:00 PM | Football
Mustangs coach Beau Baldwin has constructed a potent passing game
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State faces the Big Sky's second-ranked passing offense on California's Central Coast Saturday when the Bobcats visit Cal Poly.

The 6 pm MT contest stands as MSU's final road test of the regular season, and when Bobcat coach Brent Vigen evaluates the Mustangs he sees a squad more impressive than its 1-8 (0-6 in the Big Sky) record reflects. "I know Cal Poly hasn't won a game in our conference yet, but they have played some people tough. They played NAU tough (a 31-29 loss) and obviously NAU played us tough."

The Mustangs' only win was an early-season 28-27 win against San Diego, but Beau Baldwin's third Cal Poly squad has continued to churn out passing yards at a clip familiar to anyone familiar with his prolific offenses at Eastern Washington. Mustangs quarterback Spencer Brasch, a transfer from Cal, throws for 238.6 yards per game, while receiver Chris Coleman leads the league with 95.2 yards per game.

"They have good skill guys," Bobcat coach Brent Vigen said of Cal Poly's prolific offense. "Coach Baldwin is a good coach. When you watch what they're doing passing-wise you realize they're very dangerous. On defense they play hard and they have good skill guys."

Linebacker David Meyer leads the Mustangs with 66 tackles and two forced fumbles. Cornerback Jay'Vion Cole broke up two passes against Montana last week and has four interceptions on the season.

The Bobcats counter with the Big Sky's top ground game. MSU averages 288.3 yards a game on the ground, with quarterbacks Tommy Mellott (92.4) and Sean Chambers (88.9) leading the way. MSU's top three running backs remain shelved with injuries, but Elijah Elliott averages 51.2 yards a game and 5.6 per carry. Garrett Coon emerged as a threat in last week's win at NAU, rolling up 58 yards on 10 carries.

The Bobcat defense forced two Lumberjacks turnovers a week ago on strip sacks by Brody Grebe and Callahan O'Reilly, while MSU's offense didn't give the ball away. The Cats stand +9 in turnovers in the last five games.

Saturday's game kicks off at 6 pm MT (5 pm PT) at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on the Cal Poly campus. The game is televised across Montana on MTN stations (check local listings) and streams on ESPN+. The game also airs on the Bobcat Radio Network across Montana and on the Varsity Network app.
