Brent Vigen is named Big Sky Co-Coach of they Year and Sean Chambers is Newcomer of the Year
BOZEMAN, Montana – Brent Vigen earned Big Sky Co-Coach of the Year honors and Sean Chambers was named the league's Newcomer of the Year to highlight Montana State's selections to the 2022 All-Big Sky awards list.
Four Bobcats earned all-league first team honors among the 14 players feted by the Big Sky Conference on Wednesday. Junior fullback Derryk Snell was the only offensive player honored, while defensive linemen Sebastian Valdez and Brody Grebe, both sophomores, and linebacker Callahan O'Reilly earned selections.
While the Bobcat offensive line helped Montana State lead the Big Sky in most rushing yards and fewest sacks allowed, no players from that group were chosen all-league first team. Offensive tackle Rush Reimer (2nd team), guard JT Reed (3rd team) and center Justus Perkins (honorable mention) each earned awards as sophomores. Both of the team's quarterbacks, sophomore Tommy Mellott and Chambers, a junior, earned All-Big Sky Second Team honors, along with senior Ty Okada, the team's nickel back.
A pair of players on the opposite ends of their time in the MSU program joined Reed on the third team. Sixth-year receiver Willie Patterson and sophomore kick returner Marqui Johnson, a first-year transfer, each landed third team honors. Perkins, linebacker Noland Askelson and kicker Blake Glessner earned honorable mention honors.
Of the 14 Bobcats honored, only O'Reilly, Okada and Patterson are seniors. Chambers, Askeslon and Snell are juniors, and the other eight are sophomores. Montana State's four first team selections checks in as fifth-most (behind Sacramento State, like MSU an undefeated co-champion, with nine, UC Davis' six, and Weber State and Montana's five each). The number of total selections stands: Sac State 18, Idaho 16, UC Davis and Weber State 16, Montana State 14, Montana 13, Northern Colorado 10, Eastern Washington and Portland State eight each, Northern Arizona seven, Cal Poly four, and Idaho State two.
