MSU runs past Grizzlies
Tommy Mellott ran for 141 yards and Elijah Elliott added 126 more as Montana State ran past Montana 55-21 on Saturday in the 121st Brawl of the Wild.
On the game's very first play, Mellott ripped off a 12-yard gain to set the tone of the whole day. Mellott went on to score two touchdowns as the Bobcats (10-1, 8-0) reached the end zone five times on the ground while rushing for 439 of their 561 total yards. The Grizzlies entered the game yielding just 97.3 yards on the ground per game, a mere 2.6 yards per carry. The Bobcats pounded the ball for 6.7 yards per carry. In addition, Mellott completed six of eight passes for 104 yards.
The win gave the Bobcats a piece of the Big Sky Conference championship, depending on the outcome of Saturday's later game between Sacramento State and UC Davis.
On a picture-perfect day with crystal clear skies the Bobcats also got running scores from Sean Chambers, Marqui Johnson and RJ Fitzgerald. Overall, MSU earned 32 first downs and had the ball for nearly 40 minutes. Chambers' score was his 17th of the season.
MSU also got a touchdown from Jory Choate who recovered an errant snap on a UM punt attempt in the endzone. It was the fifth time this season that a MSU opponent snapped the ball into the endzone on a punt attempt. Another score came on a trick play where tight Derryk Snell lined up in the backfield and tossed a jump pass to fellow tight end Treyton Pickering from 18 yards out. The Bobcats were unfazed by the 11 degree temperature as the game began, shortly after ESPN College GameDay signed off just north of Bobcat Stadium.
MSU iced the game late in the second quarter when Kenneth Eiden IV tripped up UM quarterback Lucas Johnson and forced a fumble which was recovered by Callahan O'Reilly on the MSU 3-yard line. Had the Grizzlies (7-4, 4-4) managed to score at that point the outcome of the game may have been different.
The Bobcats also got an interception by Missoula product Rylan Ortt which led to the second of Blake Glessner's two field goals, this one from 28 yards after he connected earlier from 34 yards out. He has now hit seven straight field goals. Ortt also had a team-best six tackles. MSU did not turn the ball over.
The win, in front of a record crowd of 22,037, was MSU's 18th straight at home, the best in team history.
