First-year alpine head coach Kris Shampeny makes his debut at the helm of the Montana State program as the Bobcats host the MSU Invitational, beginning Saturday and going through Jan. 19.
Shampeny, a former Bobcat student-athlete, was named head coach on July 22. He is the son of former MSU men's ski coach John Shampeny and the nephew of former MSU women's ski coach Gary Shampeny.
Shampeny and the Bobcat alpine contingent will wait until Tuesday, Jan. 18 to begin its season. The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association alpine circuit begins with giant slalom races on Tuesday on Hanton's Hollow at Bridger Bowl. The meet concludes Wednesday with the slalom events. Both races are slated to begin at 10 a.m.
"We've had a great fall training-wise," Shampeny said. "We spent two weeks in November at Copper Mountain in Colorado, and last week we raced in Sun Valley with some outstanding results. We had numerous kids reach the podium in Sun Valley led by Dawson Yates on the men's side and Kristiane Bekkestad for the women."
Riley Seger, a two-time NCAA qualifier and a Second-Team All-America performer for the Bobcats, has raced for Team Canada in World Cup Super G the past month in the United States, Italy, and Switzerland. He will rejoin the MSU squad this weekend.
Defending national champion Utah, along with Denver, Colorado, Westminster and MSU dominated the alpine races last season and will be the squads to beat in 2022, as well.
"We're ready to get going," Shampeny said. "I think racing in Sun Valley will be a good stepping-stone for us going into the MSU Invitational. We gained a lot of confidence and we really want to be leading the alpine team scoring coming out of our own meet. If we can do that, it will be a good jump on the season and a huge confidence booster. If we're in the mix, we'll be okay. We have room for improvement."
Shampeny was also pleased with the condition of the race-course at Bridger Bowl.
"This might be the best surface we've ever had up there," Shampeny said. "It will make for a fair race."
The Nordic portion of the MSU Invitational begins Saturday with the 5/10k freestyle and finishes Sunday with the 10/15k classic races. The invitational is part of a joint competition of Intermountain Cross Country, the RMISA and the USSS Super Tour and will be held at the Lake Creek Ski Center in Ketchum, Idaho.
On Thursday, Jan. 20 the RMISA will run a NCAA Qualifier in slalom at Bridger Bowl.
