Louis Mühlen-Schulte, Åge Solheim and Dawson Yates all recorded top 10 finishes at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Invitational at Westminster to pace Montana State in slalom on Tuesday afternoon at Snowbird Ski Resort.
The RMISA ran two slalom events on the men's side Tuesday. The women opened the invitational in slalom on Monday, with Nordic races beginning on Feb. 22 at Soldier Hollow.
In the opening slalom race, Mühlen-Schulte and Solheim placed eighth and tenth, respectively. Mühlen-Schulte recorded a two-run total of 1:34.27, while Solheim notched 1:34.27. Dawson Yates completed MSU's scoring placing 12th in 1:35.18.
Mühlen-Schulte, a junior from South Yarra, Australia, has recorded five top 10 finishes, while Solheim, a junior from Staarheim, Norway has tallied four, this winter.
"Louis and Åge are contenders every race," Francis commented. "They showed great speed at times."
Also registering times for Montana State were Riley Seger, 24th, 1:39.38, and Zak Vinter, 31st, 1:43.85. Jamie Casselman did not finish his first run.
"It was a tough day," said MSU head coach Kevin Francis. "The conditions were inconsistent, with deep ruts and holes developing after only a few skiers."
Utah's Bjorn Brudevoll captured the first slalom race in 1:31.96.
Yates led the Bobcats in the afternoon slalom event, finishing eighth in 1:33.65. Also scoring for MSU were Casselman, 15th, 1:35.94, and Vinter, 18th, 1:37.04.
Yates, a freshman from Richmond, B.C., Canada, logged his second top 10 showing of the season.
"Dawson Yates continues to impress with his slalom skiing," Francis said. "He is very constant, and he is building on good results and good starts. And, it was good to see Riley and freshman Jamie Casselman battling for their first points of the year."
Seger placed 20th in 1:37.90, while Mühlen-Schulte finished 22nd in 1:39.93. Mühlen-Schulte had posted the third fastest opening run in 43.92.
Solheim did not complete his second run off the second race.
"Overall, everyone improved each run," Francis said. "We were in a great position to improve upon our first race results, after the first run of the second race, but bad holes and bad luck caught all Bobcats."
Brudevoll completed his double title run clocking 1:29.32.
After the alpine events, Utah sits atop the team standing with 350 points, followed by Westminster 300.5, Colorado 283, MSU 265, Denver 261.5, Alaska Anchorage 198, Colorado Mountain 128.
