Bobcat Nordic Squad Opens Season at RMISA Invitational at Utah

Zanden McMullen paced the Montana State Nordic ski squad in its Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association opener placing fourth in the men’s 10-kilometer freestyle at the RMISA Invitational at Utah on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Hollow.
Montana State sophomore Zanden McMullen paced the Montana State Nordic ski squad in its Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association opener placing fourth in the men's 10-kilometer freestyle at the RMISA Invitational at Utah on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Hollow.
McMullen, a product of Anchorage, Alaska, completed the course in a time of 21:36.7. Last winter, McMullen placed 15th in the freestyle event at the 2020 NCAA Skiing Championships at Crosscut Mountain Sports Center.
Also producing points for MSU were Ti Donaldson, tenth, 22:16.4, and Reed Godfrey, 12th, 22:31.2. The Bobcats also received strong performances from Eli Jensen, 13th, 22:56.1, and Eli Hermanson, 17th, 23:02.1.
"It was a great day for racing," said first-year MSU Nordic coach Adam St. Pierre. "Zanden was the leader for much of the race but faded in the last 3km to finish fourth. The men's team is experienced and will get faster as the season progresses."
Colorado's Magnus Boee captured the men's freestyle title in 21:24.3.
The Montana State women's squad was led by Sophia Mazzoni and Aubrey LeClair. The duo finished 15th and 16th, respectively. Mazzoni covered the 5km course in 13:36.1, while LeClair clocked 13:50.5. Also scoring for the Bobcats was Adrianna Proffitt, 23rd, 14:23.3. Emma Albrecht finished 26th in 15:01.8.
"The women's team has benefitted from the addition of Sophia Mazzoni and Emma Albrecht," St. Pierre stated. "The women are young compared to the RMISA competition and will get better with more racing under our belt."
Utah's Novie McCabe won the women's crown in 12:14.3
After two events, Utah sits atop the team standings with 186 points, followed by Alaska-Anchorage 170, Colorado 153, MSU 126, Alaska-Fairbanks 107, Denver 100, Westminster 0 and Colorado Mountain 0.
The Nordic portion of the RMISA Invitational at Utah will conclude on Monday with the classic races. The alpine events will be held Feb. 11-12 at Park City Mountain Resort.
