A look at Bobcat football on September 10 in history...
September 10
SPOTLIGHT: Montana State's Gold Rush tradition was four years old when Bobcat fans gathered for a non-conference showdown against future Big Sky rival UC Davis. For really the only time in Gold Rush history that event was somewhat overshadowed, because that day featured the opening of the Sonny Holland End Zone, which added 4,000 or so seats and boosted Bobcat Stadium's stature into the upper echelon of the FCS. The crowd of 18,487 saw UC Davis score early to grab a 7-0 lead, but once the Bobcats got untracked offensively there was no slowing them down. Cody Kirk plunged into the end zone from five yards out late in the first quarter to tie the score, Elvis Akpla caught a 21-yard pass from DeNarius McGhee midway through the second quarter, Kruiz Siewing's 36-yard touchdown catch with 2:33 to play until halftime increased the lead to 21-7, then after MSU held the Aggies on fourth down near midfield McGhee scored on a 10-yard run to give the Bobcats an insurmountable 28-7 lead at the intermission. Kirk added his second touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, and the Cats coasted to a 38-14 win. Amidst the excitement of the stadium's new addition and the traditional buzz generated by the Gold Rush game, it's almost lost that this game marked Montana State's first wearing gold jersey's at home since, likely, the 1950s. It also spurred an idea took hold in 2017 to wear gold jerseys for each Gold Rush game, which has been the case for the previous three.
BONUS: Four years ago, Jeff Choate logged his first win as a college head coach with a Gold Rush win over Bryant. After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, MSU's offense responded. Tyler Bruggman threw touchdown passes to John D'Agostino and Mitchell Herbert within a minute of each other early in the second quarter, and the Cats led 14-10 at halftime. Gunnar Brekke and Nick LaSane each scored on short touchdown runs in the third quarter, and MSU's defense took the ball away twice in the fourth quarter - Fletcher Collins forced and recovered a fumble, and with just under five minutes left John Walker picked off a pass - to preserve the win. Brekke led all players with 80 rushing yards, while he and D'Agostino each caught four passes. Bryant out-gained MSU in total yards 452 to 265, but the Bobcats recovered two fumbles and picked off three passes to stymie Bryant.
