Things didn't go the way the Bobcats wanted, but a template for success was implemented
A look at Bobcat football on today's date throughout history...
September 5
SPOTLIGHT: It's an image that remains imprinted in the minds of those standing by as witnesses - Cliff Hysell, always aware of visual imagery, straddling the 50-yard line on the Bobcats side of the field, in his first game as a college head coach, wearing blue jeans, a short-sleeved work shirt, and boots. If Hysell was going to lead a blue collar program at his alma mater, it was going to start with him. Across the field for his debut as MSU's head coach was a perennial Division II success story in Sacramento State. The Hornets defense turned up the heat on Montana State, limiting the Cats to just seven points, four first downs, and 26 total yards. The Bobcats ran the ball 30 times and threw it 28 on that night, a pattern that would become familiar to MSU fans. Just nine months after hanging up the red and black of Bozeman High, quarterback Chad Mayer was forced into action for his hometown Bobcats when Mark Fisher was injured. Rob Tesch provided the fireworks for Montana State with a 68-yard punt return for touchdown. In forcing four Sac State turnovers without giving the ball away, the Bobcats established a template that Cliff Hysell's teams would use throughout his tenure. Better days were ahead for the Bobcats, but Hysell had laid out his plan for everyone to see on that hot night in Superior California.
