The Cats took it to a pair of undermanned independent teams from Butte
A day-by-day look at Bobcat football history...
September 26
SPOTLIGHT: There's likely no one alive who remembers September 26, 1925, but anyone who was on the Montana State campus that day saw something never seen before or since.
The Bobcat football team played a doubleheader.
Ott Romney's club was originally scheduled to host Whitworth, but the small, private school from Spokane was facing budget and athletic difficulties. Whitworth canceled its trip to Bozeman, so Romney got creative. First, he scheduled a game against the independent Centerville team from Butte, which had played the Cats on the first Romney Field in 1924. Then he added Englewood, also an independent club from the Minig City, to the slate. On the same day. Finally, Romney split his squad so as to not place too stern a physical tax on his men a week before traveling to Colorado.
Montana State beat Centerville 21-0 with a squad that featured captain Van Dobeus and returning stars Pop Gregory, Tenney Babcock, Hugh Cottam, and Adolph Hartwig. The Blue and Gold rolled up 16 first downs in the opener, and in spite of sloppy offensive play that included several plenty of fumbles and penalties, according to the 1926 Montanan. Hugh Cottam completed five passes, per The Exponent, to "Hook and Ladder" Hartwig.
In the second contest of the day, the Cats swamped a much smaller team. Val Glynn, Herb Winner and Rip Wilson led Montana State in the nightcap. Winner returned the opening kickoff to the Englewood three, and the Bobcats were off and running.
