A look at Bobcat football history day-by-day...

SPOTLIGHT: Sometimes an early-season win can be fool's gold, shiny and pretty but ultimately without value. But sometimes it can set up a really good season.
Montana State's 10-7 win against Weber State on February 25, 1993, definitely falls into the latter category. Against an explosive Weber State team averaging 32 points and 455 yards a game, Montana State's defense brought its 'A' game. MSU held Weber State's explosive aerial attack to 13-of-34 passing and just 154 yards, intercepting three passes and breaking up another. Morgan Ryan snared his fourth pick of the season. The Bobcats rushed for 353 yards against WSU, with Fred Moore and Clint Morton each surpassing the 100-yard mark.
The 1993 team's pass defense, on full display this day, was really something. Cornerback Sean Hill earned First Team All-America honors, while safety Morgan Ryan probably should have. He intercepted five passes in 1993 to finish his remarkable career with 22 for the all-time Bobcat record and a share of the Big Sky career mark. Defensive end Jason Hicks earned 3rd Team All-America honors while registering 14 sacks and 19 tackles-for-loss.
BONUS: As chronicled yesterday, when we looked at MSU's second straight win over Eastern Washington, Rob Ash entered 2010 knowing that to reach its goals his program would need to beat Eastern Washington and UM. The latter would take care of itself in November, but even at home tackling EWU was a more monumental task. As it currently stands, the Bobcats have beaten the Grizzlies one-third of the time in the all-time series, but the number is even lower (around one-quarter of the time) against Eastern. Sensational EWU running back Taiwan Jones posed a formidable threat, but the Bobcat defense was up to the task. Averaging 287.3 all-purpose yards a game entering the contest, he finished with 63 yards rushing and impacted the game only marginally. The team's star-studded defensive front of Zach Minter, Preston Gale, Dan Ogden, John Laidet and Caleb Schreibeis held the explosive Eagles to 382 total yards, but MSU's depleted offensive line was also marvelous. Without starting tackle Leo Davis, reserves Andrew Verlanic and Jesse Hoffman filled in exceptionally well. The Bobcats' easy 30-0 win propelled the team to a share of the Big Sky title and an appearance in the FCS Playoffs, but 2010 proved to be a memorable season for the Eagles, as well. Eastern won its only FCS National Championship.
