Montana State's only win on September 2 was the thriller at Colorado
A look at Bobcat football on today's date in history...
September 2
SPOTLIGHT: Montana State head football coach Mike Kramer sat in his usual spot in the front row of bus one as his Bobcat football team awaited entry onto the tarmac of the Denver airport. Kramer's seventh squad had just beaten Colorado of the Big 12, MSU's first win against a Division I-A opponent in more than 20 years. As his bus idled, Kramer accepted a cell phone with ESPN radio on the other end of the line. He held it in silence as the broadcast crew waited out a commercial break, then his million-watt smile betrayed what was next. "Thanks, guys. Long-time listener, first time caller." His first interview with an ESPN outlet during his time at MSU followed a stirring, brilliant win. Jeff Hastings kicked a pair of second quarter to push MSU to a 6-3 lead, but a Buffs touchdown gave the home team a 10-6 halftime cushion. After Montana State forced a three-and-out possession to open the second half, Michael Jefferson caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Cory Carpenter to push MSU back into the lead. The Cats held Colorado without a first down in the third quarter, and early in the final stanza Hastings kicked his third field goal. Then, the day's biggest play occurred. On the ensuing kickoff, with MSU leading 16-10, Andre Fuller forced a fumble that Bryant Matthews recovered, and three plays later - with 2:50 to play - Hastings converted his fourth field goal of the day. The Buffs drove into Bobcat territory on the ensuing drive, but a sack by Bobby Daly and Will Claggett pushed CU near midfield, and on fourth down Mason Crosby's 63-yard field goal attempt fell short. The Bobcats had a signature, historic win.
CU GAME BONUS: Montana State's win over Colorado certainly shocked the college football world, but it was not unprecedented. One-time league-mates with CU in the old Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the Bobcats have enjoyed considerable success against the Buffs. After a 23-3 loss at Boulder in 1925, the Bobcats rallied for a 6-3 road win the following season and followed that with a 12-6 win in Bozeman in 1927. The Bobcats currently own a three-game win streak against Colorado.
DOUBLE BONUS: Montana State's four games played on September 2 in history each came against Division I-A or FBS opponents. The 2017 contest at Washington State, a 31-0 Cougars win, is the most recent shutout in Bobcat annals.
