A look at Bobcat football on today's date throughout history...
September 16
SPOTLIGHT: A bit of Bobcat history occurred on September 16, and no one knew it. The Bobcats edged North Dakota State 27-24 in Great Falls, ending the age-old tradition of hosting football games in neutral stadiums.
From 1919, when the Bobcats lost to Wyoming in Casper, until the 2003 loss that Eastern Washington hosted in Spokane's Joe Albi Stadium, the Bobcats played 36 regular season games at neutral sites. Of those, Montana State hosted 25 of them against out-of-state foes in the Treasure State.
Here is Montana State's record in hosted neutral site games: 0-3 vs. Wyoming (all in Billings), 0-1 vs. BYU in Great Falls, 3-0 against Portland (1-0 in Butte, 1-0 in Great Falls, 1-0 in Anaconda), 0-1 vs. San Jose State in Butte, 1-0 vs. Idaho in Great Falls, 3-3 aganist North Dakota State (1-1 in Glendive, 2-1 in Great Falls, 0-1 in Billings), 0-1 vs. Eastern Washington in Great Falls, 3-1 against South Dakota State in Great Falls, 0-1 against Fresno State in Great Falls, 0-1 against Portland State in Billings, 0-1 against Long Beach State in Great Falls, and 0-1 against Hawaii in Billings. MSU was also 1-0 vs. Carroll in regular season games in Great Falls, and 1-0 in a 'state championship' contest. The Cats also played a state title game against the Saints in Sheridan, Wyoming,
The 1972 contest against the Bison stood as Montana State's home opener, and fell one week after the Cats opened the season with a 48-28 loss at North Dakota. MSU beat North Dakota State 27-24 in Great Falls, coming from behind to win in the game's closing seconds. Wayne Edwards scored on the game's fifth play, a 57-yard gallop, and pretty much dominated the game. He finished with 106 yards on 13 carries, while quarterback Zoonie McLean gained 89 yards on the ground and threw for 48 more. McLean rushed for two touchdowns, including the game-winning plunge from one yard out with 22 seconds to play. The Bobcats recovered two NDSU fumbles, and picked off a pair of passes.
That victory gave MSU a 10-6 all-time record in Great Falls' Memorial Stadium. That record includes a 'state championship' clash against Carroll to decide Montana's top college squad (the Bobcats won 7-0 on Thanksgiving Day), and a scheduled contest in 1930 that the Bobcats won 21-0.
