Montana State and Central Arkansas compiled some amazing offensive numbers
September 13
SPOTLIGHT: Rob Ash's brilliant nine-year coaching tenure at Montana State saw some wild games. In one-quarter of Ash's 108 games, his Bobcat offense combined with the opponent to score more than 70 points (26 times). One of them occurred on this date in 2014, when the Bobcats held on to beat Central Arkansas 43-33. Montana State led 37-13 with nine minutes to play, but then all hell broke loose. Central Arkansas quarterback Ryan Howard threw a two-yard touchdown pass with 8:46 to play, and then threw another four plays after MSU quarterback Dakota Prukop threw an interception. All of a sudden Montana State's lead had shrunk to 37-25 with 6:47 remaining. The Bobcat defense then stepped up, forcing a turnover-on-downs after a short gain followed by three incomplete passes. Gunnar Brekke's 34-yard run set up a short touchdown, and the lead once again looked comfortable. with 4:05 remaining. There was plenty of action remaining, though. The Cats again forced a turnover on downs, but on MSU's second play from scrimmage a Bobcat fumble gave Central Arkansas the ball at its own five-yard line. The Bears marched 95 yards for a touchdown in just over two minutes, a drive that chewed enough time to leave only 35 seconds on the clock. When the Cats recovered the on-side kick attempt the outcome was decided. Still, it was a wild one. The Bobcats and Bears combined for 47 first downs and 975 total yards. This would remain Montana State's earliest game on the calendar until 1959.
