A look at Bobcat football on today's date in history...
September 11
SPOTLIGHT: As near misses go, this one was simultaneously exhilarating and deflating. One week after opening the season with a 59-20 win against Fort Lewis, MSU traveled to Washington State for a game which figured to be lopsided in the other direction. From the beginning, though, this one felt different. Jason Cunningham connected on two short field goals in the first quarter to give MSU a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on a beautiful late summer evening. Washington State answered with a touchdown early in the second quarter, but Elvis Akpla's 13-yard touchdown catch from DeNarius McGhee midway through the second quarter and Julius Lloyd's midway through the third gave MSU a 19-7 advantage. The Cats led 22-7 when Jason Cunning nailed a 29-yard field goal with 6:26 to play in the third quarter, an advantage the team carried into the final period. Jeff Tuel threw a four-yard pass to Andrei Lintz to trim the lead to 22-14 five seconds into the fourth quarter, and with 5:06 to play found Jared Karstetter. The two-point conversion failed, but a once-comfortable lead was nearly gone. The Cats took over at their own 10-yard line with 5:01 to play, but on the second play of the drive McGhee threw an interception on a short pass over the middle, and Washington State's Nico Grasu kicked a field goal to give Washington State it's first lead since the first quarter. Showing no ill-effects from the turnover, McGhee drove the Bobcats into WSU territory. With just over a minute to play, on a second-and-two, McGhee threw a dump pass over the middle which was intercepted, effectively ending MSU's upset attempt. The Bobcats lost 23-22, but even in defeat, and in spite of throwing three interceptions, McGhee was brilliant. He completed 24 of his 37 throws for 266 yards, with two touchdowns. Clay Bignell's 11 tackles led the Bobcats, and freshman Aleksei Grosulak logged seven takedowns and an interception.
