The first game for MSU's two most recent coaches came on September 1
A look at happenings on this day in Montana State football history...
September 1
SPOTLIGHT: In possibly the biggest win of the Earle Solomonson era, Montana State opened the 1990 season with a 27-24 win at defending Big Sky Champion Idaho. Reggie Carthon returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and the Cats took the ball away from UI three times. Corey Widmer, Jon Skelton and Clint Bryan forced fumbles, and MSU sacked the Vandals nine times - three by Widmer, the eventual Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year.
BONUS: Two Bobcat coaches made their debuts on the MSU sideline on this day in history. Montana State's winningest head coach began his MSU career today in 2007, when Rob Ash's first Bobcat team proved a tough out in a 38-7 loss at Texas A&M. The 2016 season opened with Jeff Choate on the Bobcat sideline for the first time, as MSU lost a close game at Idaho, 27-24. Choate's visit to the Kibbie Dome in Moscow brought him to the building he saw so many Vandals games as a youngster growing up in Saint Maries, Idaho. Ash and Choate are the only two men to helm the Bobcats since 2007, combining for 98-60 record (70 in Ash's nine seasons, 28 in Choate's four). Six of Montana State's 11 all-time playoff appearances occurred in this time. Here is a look at MSU's winningest head coaches through their first four seasons at MSU (by win percentage):
.676 Tony Storti, 1952-55, '56 (23-10-1)
.657 Herb Agocs, 19 (1958-61)
.630 Rob Ash, 2007-10 (29-17)
.585 Jim Sweeney, 1963-66 (24-17)
.571 Sonny Holland, 1971-74 (24-17-1)
