Bobcats struggle with injuries in 1-5-1 campaign
89 Years Ago – 1931
June 8: Each day leading to Montana State's 2020 season opener, scheduled for September 5, we will look at the season as many years ago as it is days until kickoff of the Gold Rush game.
89 YEARS AGO – After beating the Anaconda Anodes club team and tying St. Mary's (Minnesota) to open the season, Montana State dropped five straight games. Gonzaga and Montana State played the last game in its one-sided rivalry. The Bulldogs whipped Montana State 38-0 in Spokane, closing the relationship with a 4-1 record against the Bobcats. The Cats lost to Utah State 21-6, but actually scored for the only time in a five-year span, then after the Gonzaga loss fell to Wyoming for the first time since 1925. The Bobcats closed with a loss at Butte in the Copper Bowl, and fell 6-0 at Carroll College to end the season.
MOST COMMON STARTING LINEUP: Left End-Bobby Long, Left Tackle-Gay Kravick, Left Guard-Fred Mills, Center-Paul McLean, Right Guard-Bud Bauer, Right Tackle-Elmer Mencer/Joe Hazen, Right End-Ed Breeden, Quarterback-George Parke, Left Halfback-Chuck Nagel, Right Halfback-Jay Leland, Fullback-Fred Keenan.
POST-SEASON HONORS: All-America – none. All-Rocky Mountain –Not available. All-State –(1st) End Bob Long, Quarterback George Parke. (2nd) Tackle Elmer Mencer, Center Paul McLean.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN STANDINGS: The Bobcats lost their only two league games, tail-ending the RMC for the first time since 1923.
NOTES 'N' STUFF: After two full seasons playing home games in permanent Gatton Field the Bobcats had played only five home games, and two of those were against the Centerville and Anaconda club teams.
From the kickoff of the 1931 season until the end of the '37 campaign, the Bobcats won only three Rocky Mountain Conference games (3-27-1) against league opponents. Beginning in 1938, traditional RMC schools such as Wyoming and those from Utah broke away (BYU, Colorado, Colorado A&M, Denver, Utah, Utah State and Wyoming formed the Skyline Conference), leaving the league's smaller schools to carry on.
