Montana State's 1925 season boasted a winning overall record for the third straight season
95 Years Ago – 1925
June 2: Each day leading to Montana State's 2020 season opener, scheduled for September 5, we will look at the season as many years ago as it is days until kickoff of the Gold Rush game.
95 YEARS AGO – Montana State's 1925 season was not anyone's idea of a success, but it was almost certainly a turning point. The Cats won only one of five Rocky Mountain Conference games – the victory was a 25-0 whitewashing of Colorado Mines – but did win five of seven non-league tilts. Strangely, two of those wins came on the same day. The Cats opened the season with part of the team beating Centerville from Butte 21-0, and a mostly different group of Montana State men whipping Englewood 86-0. The Cats also beat Montana Tech 72-0, Intermountain Union 29-0, and Mt. St. Charles (Carroll College) 30-0. If you've noticed that there's not a truly quality win on the schedule, you're onto something. But what isn't visible is that the Bobcats featured a slew of future stars. Post-season honorees Val Glynn, Bill Bawden, Van Dobeus, and Tenney Babcock each returned for the 1926 season, which – spoiler alert – would prove very successful. In fact, that season kicked off Montana State's best run of success in the Rocky Mountain Conference that featured Colorado, Wyoming, Denver, Colorado State, Utah, Utah State, and BYU.
MOST COMMON STARTING LINEUP: Left End-Val Glynn, Left Tackle-Arthur Olsen, Left Guard-Jim Ario, Center-Francis Wilson, Right Guard- Vander Dobeus (captain), Right Tackle-Bill Bawden, Right End-Herschel Hurd, Quarterback-Herb Winner, Left Halfback-Tenney Babcock, Right Halfback-Harold Wylie/Hugh Cottam, Fullback-Earl Gregory.
POST-SEASON HONORS: All-America – none. All-Rocky Mountain – (2nd) Val Glynn, End. (Team chosen by Associated Press) All-State – (1st) Val Glynn, End; Bill Bawden, Tackle; Van Dobeus, Halfback; Tenny Babcock, Halfback. (2nd) Earl Gregory, Fullback; Hugh Cottam, Halfback; Herb Winner, Quarterback; Joe Dobeus, Tackle; Francis Wilson, Center. (Team selected by the UM Kaimin)
NATIONAL RANKINGS: none
ROCKY MOUNTAIN STANDINGS: 1-4 in RMC, 10th out of 12 teams. Montana State's only conference win came against Colorado School of Mines. The team lost to Wyoming and Utah State at home, and at Colorado and BYU.
