Montana State's days playing steep competition was numbered, as were the days of Schubert Dyche's first tenure as head coach
85 Years Ago – 1935
June 12: Each day leading to Montana State's 2020 season opener, scheduled for September 5, we will look at the season as many years ago as it is days until kickoff of the Gold Rush game.
85 YEARS AGO – While the fortunes of Montana State University as an institution of higher learning seemed on the rise in 1935 – the school added an all-time high 410 students that fall and new residence halls for women, now the Quads, opened – the football program's fortunes remained cloudy. After dropping the opener at Utah State 33-7, the Bobcats welcomed old friend Ott Romney and his BYU Cougars to town for the home opener. On the field now named for Romney's long-ago Bobcat teammate, Montana State earned a 7-0 victory behind end Bill Stebbins, who "punted the team to victory," according to the Exponent. The Bobcats fell to UM in Butte the next week, and in fact the offense struggled throughout the season. Montana State scored single touchdowns against Utah State and BYU then failed to score against the Grizzlies, Utah, and Northern Colorado. The Cats beat Montana Tech 6-3 and tied Idaho State 7-7, but on the season scored just 29 points while surrendering 136.
After the season head coach Schubert Dyche assumed full-time Athletic Director duties. Jack Croft, a former star athlete at Utah State, where he entered the coaching profession at his alma mater under Dick Romney, Ott's brother, before assuming head coach duties in Bozeman.
