Cats play games in three different Montana cities during 1934 season
86 Years Ago – 1934
June 11: Each day leading to Montana State's 2020 season opener, scheduled for September 5, we will look at the season as many years ago as it is days until kickoff of the Gold Rush game.
86 YEARS AGO – The Cats opened the season at Great Falls with a home win over the Englewood club team from Butte, and also beat the North Dakota Teachers (now Minot State) at Gatton Field. Those were Montana State's only wins of the season, which included season-ending shutouts by Northern Colorado (Homecoming) and the University (in Butte).
MOST COMMON STARTING LINEUP: Left End-Bill Stebbins, Left Tackle-Gay Kravick, Left Guard-Dick Baltzell, Center-Vernon Almich, Right Guard-Bill Pentilla, Right Tackle-Charles Stroup, Right End-Bill Coey, Quarterback-Glenn Hansen, Left Halfback-Louis Edwards, Right Halfback-Darby Overturf, Fullback-Gordon Eastman.
POST-SEASON HONORS: All-America – none. All-Rocky Mountain – (HM) Louis Edwards.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: none.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN STANDINGS: Montana State dropped all four of its Rocky Mountain Conference game to finish 12th out of 12. Western State finished 0-3.
NOTES 'N' STUFF: Montana State played a pair of games that may be the school's first two under lights. Montana State's second game was a night game against BYU in Great Falls, and the played a mid-October night game against Wyoming in Billings. The Bobcats lost both, but a crowd of 5,000 in Billings – included a large contingent from Bozeman that took the train over and snake-walked through downtown behind Lou Howard's fine Montana State Band before the game – made the event memorable to all present.
