A letter from Montana State Director of Athletics Leon Costello
Dear Bobcats,
I hope this letter continues to find you and your loved ones healthy and safe as we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. I want to let you know that everyone in Bobcat Athletics is thinking about all our fans, alumni and friends during this trying time. We know each of you has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic in some way. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers and we will get through this TOGETHER!
I want to thank all front-line workers that continue to ensure we have the essential items such as food, water and healthcare during this time. With that said, I want to give a shout out to Bozeman Health, the official team physicians of Bobcat Athletics, and all support areas within the athletic department for continuing to provide the needed support for Bobcat student-athletes and our athletic programs. One of our mottos in the athletic department is TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More). It takes a TEAM effort in the time of any crisis and I am so impressed with our Bobcat community during this time.
The Bobcat athletic staff, coaches, and student-athletes continue to show their strength and resolve by embracing this "new normal" environment. All have adjusted their everyday operations and continue to creatively develop and support each student-athlete in these unusual conditions. We are fortunate to have an extraordinary group of coaches and staff continuing to be CHAMPIONS and working TOGETHER on behalf of Montana State University and our student-athletes.
We continue to monitor the landscape of college athletics and hope for its timely return. We have regular communications with the Big Sky Conference office and our colleagues at Big Sky Conference institutions. TOGETHER we are assessing the information and data known at this time and planning for what the future holds. Please know, we will continue to make decisions that are in the best interest of the health, well-being and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans. In the meantime, the football season ticket deadline has moved to June 1. We understand that some of our fans may have been financially impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and we are dedicated to ensuring you can enjoy Bobcat Football again this year. Please let us know how we can help. Click here for more information.

In this time of uncertainty, I'm grateful that you, our fans, have continued to stay engaged with us in so many ways. While we may not have competitions or events right now, we want to stay connected. Our entire department continues to use social media as an important platform to deliver valuable content. We also have continued to use traditional media and our website as resources for Bobcat information. Please follow our teams and our coaches on all platforms to ensure you don't miss any Bobcat information during this time.
I'm excited to reintroduce the series 'Dear Montana State,' highlighting our coaches and staff through questions from our fans. Below, you can view the questions for this week's feature and click the link to view the video here.
1. What have you learned from this experience?
2. How have you adjusted your work routine?
3. How are the student-athletes handling the situation?
4. What sort of budget impact will COVID-19 have on Bobcat Athletics?
5. Let's back up to really the start of all this craziness right now… the cancelation of the Big Sky Conference basketball tournament, the NCAA Ski Championship, and then ultimately all of spring sports. Can you take us behind the scenes of some of those early conversations?
6. The NCAA has granted eligibility relief for our spring sports. What does that look like here at Montana State?
7. We announced the completion of our fundraising for the Bobcat Athletic Complex this past football season. Obviously, the timeline of pretty much everything right now is fluid… how do you see this project unfolding in the next weeks and months?
8. Everyone is adjusting to a new normal right now in this virtual world. As the leader of our athletic department, what's your approach to culture and morale right now?
9. Last question… there is so much we just don't know right now. How do you plan for the unknown?
Each week, we will announce our guests and provide an opportunity for you to submit questions. I hope you enjoy this new feature from Bobcat Athletics.
Again, I want to thank all the front-line workers for their dedication to ensuring our communities have the essential needs during this time. You are truly CHAMPIONS and we are grateful. To everyone in Bobcat Nation, thank you for your continued support. Wishing you all safety and health as we work TOGETHER as one TEAM to #StopTheSpread.
In Bobcat Spirit,
Leon M. Costello
