SPOTLIGHT: Two great Bobcat offensive linemen earned All-America honors a year apart today in MSU football history. Jeff Hansen earned Walter Camp honors in 2009, and Mike Person was honored by the same organization.
While differentiating between the groups that bestow FCS All-America honors may not seem important to fans, it is interesting on a macro level. While some All-America teams may honor nearly 100 student-athletes, the Walter Camp team names 11 players on offense and 11 on defense. In other words, Hansen in 2009 and Person in 2010 were considered by SIDs and coaches in the FCS as two of the top four offensive tackles in the subdivision.
We've chronicled Person's amazing career, but Hansen is also worth a look. The Bobcats signed him out of CM Russell High in Great Falls when Jack Johnson's powerhouse program was cranking out great college prospects and winning state championships regularly. Hansen helped lead the Rustlers to a title as a seniorand came to MSU in the fall of 2005 as part of Montana State's renewed ability to sign more of the state's top prospects. He redshirted in 2005, but entered the starting lineup a couple games into the 2006 campaign and never looked back. He surrendered only one sack as a sophomore then anchored a tremendous offensive line the next two seasons. He was Second Team All-Big Sky and Honorable Mention All-America in 2008, and was a First Team All-Big Sky and First Team All-America as a senior.
Hansen played guard on some of MSU's great offensive lines, playing guard with five different Bobcats who earned All-America honors during their career (Jeff Bolton in 2005, Mike Person, 2006-10, Alex Terrien and Conrad Burbank, 2007-11, and Shaun Sampson, 2008-12).
Like all great Bobcat offensive linemen, Hansen opened holes for brilliant running backs and formed a wall in front of productive passers. But even more than that, Hansen - like Brent Swaggert and Jeff Bolton before him - was a stabilizing factor during tumultuous times. He was a foundational piece in Rob Ash's early seasons at Montana State and a highly visible player that in-state recruits could identify with in the recruiting process.
Quality college football programs are always built on the legacies of players that came before, and Jeff Hansen was a tremendous performer at MSU who helped the Bobcats transition from the three Big Sky championships won by Mike Kramer's program to the three straight titles Ash's teams compiled from 2010-12.
