The Cats took Sacramento State to task in its own backyard
A day-by-day look at Bobcat football history...
December 12
SPOTLIGHT: Montana State's path to the 1964 Camellia Bowl, like the game itself, was unusual.
For the previous three seasons the Camellia Bowl served as the NAIA National Championship, but in 1964 the NCAA College Division (forerunner to Division II and Division II) had taken over four bowl games to serve as regional championships. The Tangerine Bowl, Pecan Bowl, and Grantland Rice Bowl formed that initial alliance, although there were changes through the years that eventually led to the playoffs.
With the new format came governance by the NCAA, and that included eligibility rules that seem hard to believe now. With a couple of strong West Coast team declining invitations because their junior college transfers would not have been eligible to play, the Bobcats ended up paired against Sacramento State in Sacramento's Hughes Stadium.
The game was all Bobcats. Montana State rushed for 222 yards, including 88 yards by star fullback Dave Miller. Foy McClung threw for 73 yards and rushed for 32. Jim Tuss caught four of McClung's 10 completions, for 32 yards. McClung was named the game's outstanding back, while teammate Jerry Ross was named the game's top lineman.
The win was Montana State's first ever bowl win, as the team had tied its two previous appearances.
