Lee Williams scored three touchdowns to lead the Bobcats
A look at Bobcat football history day-by-day...
November 30
SPOTLIGHT: After earning a hard-fought 5-0 win in Missoula earlier in November, when the Aggies found the University almost "unpuncturable," according to the Exponent, Montana State's tactics changed on Thanksgiving Day in Bozeman.
"Bozeman made its best runs around the end," the December 1899 Exponent reported, and Lee Williams was the prime beneficiary. He scored the day's first three touchdowns, with Clarence Jeffers, Clifford Jeffers, Charles Flaherty, and Charles Parker adding single touchdowns.
The December 4, 1899 Anaconda Standard reported that in "the first 10 minutes on Thursday afternoon it looked as though the game was going to be a very close one. The Missoula State university boys got the ball at the start and did excellent work for a short time."
Montana State's brother act, however, ultimately prevailed. "The unexcelled work done by the two Jeffers, the two Flahertys, Parkers, Williams and other afforded the Missoula boys a good lesson in football tactics."
The Anaconda Standard report marveled at Montana State's improvement from the team's 1-5 showing in school's first two seasons of intercollegiate football combined. "From being aabout the poorest eleven in the state, the Bozeman State college football eleven has become the champion of the amateurs of the state of Montana, with large scores to its credit."
Even 121 years later, in an era where touchdowns are worth one point more than was the case then, Montana State's 38-0 win against the University in 1899 remains tied for the largest Bozeman margin of victory in the series.
BONUS: Montana State's 21-14 Division I-AA Playoff loss at McNeese State today in 2002 was a provided an exciting end to an amazing Bobcat season. The Cats survived an early onslaught to give the top-seeded Cowboys a four-quarter fight.
Plagued by injuries in the offensive line - center Nic Stevenson was injured, and his backup, Mataio Toilolo, was temporarily knocked out of the game in the second quarter - freshman quarterback Travis Lulay, a brilliant group of receivers, and a resilient, scrappy defense willed the Bobcats into the game until the end. Lulay threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Scott Turnquist was the standout among the pass catchers, with 118 yards, but Junior Adams and Aaron Hill each caught touchdowns. Kane Ioane's 13 tackles led all players, while David Smith added 10. Jon Montoya sacked the quarterback twice. The issue wasn't decided until Corey Smith fumbled a punt wth just over a minute left.
