SPOTLIGHT: It was an innocent moment after another amazing Bobcat football game in the fall of 2005.
MSU's play-by-play voice Kris Atteberry and his entourage stopped at a restaurant in Pocatello, Idaho, for nutition a few hours after the Bobcats' win that day at Weber State. A patron who may or may not have been over-served asked Atteberry how the game went. "We won," was the reply, with a description of MSU's late-game heroics.
Focusing all of his attention on Atteberry, the gentleman in Idaho State apparel reached as deep as he could or a probing question to get to the bottom of what he'd just heard. "It was the Lulay, wasn't it?"
So it was in the Big Sky Conference football ranks in the early 2000s. The Bobcat football program, spurred by a gregarious coach and sparked by a brilliant quarterback, long-dormant Montana State had risen to the top of the league.
That afternoon in Ogden was a marvelous metaphor for Lulay's entire, amazing career. The Bobcats trailed 24-10 - he threw a long touchdown pass to Nick Barbero early in the game - entering the fourth quarter, but Lulay scored on a 31-yard run with 11:02 to play in the game. He converted a third-and-10 with a 12-yard run, and his touchdown run came on fourth-and-seven. On MSU's next possession, trailing 24-17, he completed a 38-yard pass on the first play, ran for 23 on the second play, and scored a touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the one. With the game tied and time ticking toward overtime, Toph Grenfell picked off a Weber State pass to put MSU in business at the Wildcat 41 with 10 seconds left. Given one play to make something happen, Lulay found Tramaine Murray for a 19-yard completion, and Jeff Hastings nailed a 39-yard field goal to win the game.
On the day, Lulay rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 283 yards. This game wasn't Lulay's most significant win at MSU, or his craziest comeback, but it was a
