SPOTLIGHT: It may not have seemed like it today in 1971, but Bobcat fans were witnessing history.
Not only did the 5,500 assembled see Montana State's final Homecoming at Gatton Field, the crowd witnessed the final tie game in Bobcat history. Weber State snuck out of Bozeman with much the worse of things on the state sheet but a 21-21 deadlock on the scoreboard.
Montana State out-gained the Wildcats 402 yard to 232 and rolled up 23 first downs to WSC's nine, but needed a big special teams play in the fourth quarter to forge forge the 21-21 tie. Monte Boston returned a punt 76 yards for the score with 7:05 remaining to complete the scoring.
The Wildcats managed their own fair share of special teams magic, blocking two Bobcat kicks. The first was a blocked punt recovered in the end zone for a touchdown, and the second was a blocked 26-yard field goal by Tweed Rhodes as time expired to preserve the tie.
The teams combined to throw only 12 passes, but Gary Michael rushed for 139 yards on 25 carries for MSU.
In all, Gatton Field hosted 35 known Homecoming contests. Montana State sent the alumni home happy in most of those, finishing with a 22-10-3 record.
