SPOTLIGHT: Wyoming appeared on its way to an easy Homecoming win at Laramie's old Corbett Field today in 1930, holding a 6-0 lead at halftime and according to all accounts thoroughly outplaying the visitors through two quarters.
But the Bobcats responded. Max Worthington caught a touchdown pass and converted the PAT to put the Cats up 7-6 after the second half's first drive. Worthington took a pitch and raced 45 yards for Montana State's second touchdown (missing the extra point), and then Harold Sadler set up his own touchdown catch with a long punt return (Worthington made this kick) and the Bobcats had thundered the Pokes 20-0 in the third period. After a short fourth quarter punt the Cowboys took possession at the Montana State 20-yard line and UW's Carl Dir added a touchdown and the extra point to close the scoring.
Montana State's 20-13 win was the Bobcats' 10th straight gridiron victory, spanning the final five games of the 1929 season and the first half of 1930. That was the most dominant stretch of football in program history until the 1954 team finished 8-1. Montana State had only once previously won five straight games (spanning the 1923 and 1924 seasons), and had never won that many consecutive games in a season. The streak ended in the Copper Bowl a week later in Butte, and the Cats also lost at Nebraska and at BYU before closing the seaosn with a 21-0 win over Carroll in Great Falls. The team's six wins in 1930 matched the 1929 and 1922 teams for most wins in a season before World War II.
