BOBCAT FOOTBALL SUNDAY NOTEBOOK: Youngsters Show Well During Fall Brawl

Montana State showcased some of its promising young players in Bobcat Stadium Saturday
BOZEMAN, Montana – Youth was served Saturday during Montana State's Fall Brawl 2020.
True freshman running back Elijah Elliott led all players with 52 yards rushing and scored one of the White team's touchdowns, while redshirt freshman Jaharie Martin gained 29 yards on the ground and scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. Sophomore transfer Cole Sain and freshman Jacob Kettels earned praise from Bobcat head coach Jeff Choate for their performances in the offensive line. Freshman linebacker Danny Uluilakepa picked off a pass and made a scrimmage-high nine tackles.
"I thought a lot of young guys had good days," Choate said. "Danny U. and Elijah both had big games, along with a couple of the young guys in the offensive line. Bryce Leighton came here as one of the top punter recruits in the nation last year, not just the FCS, and he is as good as advertised."

With all-purpose star Troy Andersen out during the fall and Travis Jonsen, last season's primary Wildcat formation quarterback, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Choate has spent the fall searching for fits in that capacity.
He may have found a match on Saturday.
Tight end Derryk Snell, who played some quarterback as a prep start in Alaska, carried three times Saturday for 13 yards, all from behind center. He showed ability to run both inside and outside, and showed a good feel for the role. He also caught a pass for eight yards.
"Derryk played well in some different roles," Choate said of the third-year sophomore who played in a U-back role last fall. "He did some nice things."

Another veteran tight end who performed well, Jacob Hadley drew praise from Choate for handling a variety of duties. "I thought Jacob Hadley played very well," Choate said. "He blocked well and did everything we asked him to do."

One area that drew Choate's attention for potential improvement as the team prepares for a spring season is offensive efficiency. "I thought we missed some opportunities on offense," he said. "Some of that might have been the way we had teams divided and some of the personnel that wasn't playing, but there are some things we can clean up."

Led by a veteran challenging for a spot in the regular rotation, Montana State's inside linebackers performed well on Saturday. Junior Tadan Gilman logged seven tackles, including two for a loss, and made the interception in the end zone that ended the scrimmage and preserved the White victory.
"Tadan Gilman really played well," Choate said. "As a group, the inside linebackers had a good day."
Senior Michael Jobman picked off a pass and had four tackles, Callahan O'Reilly made six tackles, Uluilakepa had nine, and Blake Flovin made three.

One defensive newcomer that opened eyes for his productivity was defensive end Ben Seymour. At 6-2, 235, he doesn't possess the classic physical profile of a Division I defensive end, but he pressured the Blue team's quarterbacks all day. "Ben Seymour had a nice day," Choate said. "He was very active."
