Montana State scrimmages in Bobcat Stadium on Saturday
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State's first live scrimmage of preseason camp is slated for Saturday afternoon in Bobcat Stadium, and offensive coordinator Matt Miller is ready.
"I'm excited to see our guys go play in the play-it periods and see how it plays out when the coaches aren't standing right there behind them," said Miller, a fourth-year MSU assistant who is presiding over his first Bobcat camp as offensive coordinator. "I think it'll be good to get some situational football stuff done, some of the more scripted periods, but It's a more game-like experience for them when they don't have the security blanket standing behind them in the coach."
Defensive coordinator Kane Ioane wants his player to hit the check point he lays out for them daily. "I want to see our guys focused on the four things we talk about all the time," he said. "I want to see them play with great effort, relentless effort, flying around sideline to sideline every single snap. We talk about playing with great fundamentals. Within each position group you have your own details regarding position fundamentals, and then in the grand scheme of things we want great pad leverage, pad level, great eyes, all of those fundamentals. We want pre-snap success, lining up in the proper alignment every single snap, eyes in the right place, communicating any shifts, trades or motions that we see so we're ready to play football when the ball is snapped. Then when the ball is snapped, executing my job. All 11 guys doing their job, and seeing that as consistently as possible, over and over and over again, every single play. If we can do that every single play I think we can have success, because I think we have the personnel to be pretty dang good."
The position group drawing the most attention throughout fall camp is quarterback, but Ioane has spots to decide on his side of the ball. The Will and Mike linebacker spots each feature competition for starting honors. "Every day is evaluated when it comes to position battles," Ioane said. "(Saturday's scrimmage) to me is just another day. I don't want guys to think that this day means more than any other day, because that's when inconsistencies come into play. I want guys into every single rep, whether it's today, (Friday's) scrimmage, Sunday's meeting, believing this is where they can win or lose the job. If we can take that mentality we can be pretty good."
Saturday's scrimmage is closed to the public. The Bobcats return to practice next week, culminating in a public scrimmage on Saturday, August 17.
