CATS IN CAMP DAY ELEVEN: Bobcats Battle Through Dog Days of Preseason Camp

Jaharie Martin moves from linebacker to running back
BOZEMAN, Montana – The dog days of August arrived in Bobcat camp on Tuesday.
"Day 11 and our guys got a little chippy out there today," said Bobcat head coach Jeff Choate, "guys getting a little fatigued mentally. I think that shows up most of the time on offense. You can usually push through, effort can get you through, on defense, but if you're not focused offensively you're going to have a rough day, and I think our guys did. They picked it up at the end, converted on all four of their two-point plays, but as I told the team it started in team take-off period. We're having to do way too many corrections for this stage in camp and I think that speaks to a lack of mental focus today. And the defense brought an edge."
As the Bobcats speed toward the team's second and final scrimmage of the preseason – Saturday at 6 pm in Bobcat Stadium, open to the public – they do so gingerly, as camp aches and pains accumulate. "It's starting to tack on a little bit," Choate said. "One thing you have to pay attention to is you get a guy here or there (injured), and especially if it's in one position, the reps start to stack up on the guys in that room, so you've got to be smart about it. I think we're getting to the point where we have some soft tissue stuff, we've got a couple guys we're holding out, a couple guys we need to get MRIs to see what their status is, a lot of unknowns right now."
After tabbing Casey Bauman the starting quarterback on Monday, Choate said the attention turns to two other positions which have been open competitions through preseason camp. "I think linebackers and tight ends are two positions that are going to have to start to clarify themselves through the course of this week and into the weekend," he said. "We have a starting point now that we have one scrimmage, but I told the young men (Monday) that this is where you make your move. We've gone from a seating chart to a depth chart, and now you make your move."
Montana State returns to practice Wednesday at 10:30 am in Bobcat Stadium.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Montana State apped a position of strength to shore up on that's thin this week, when linebacker Jaharie Martin moved to running back. Choate said Martin fills that in addition to reinforcing the numbers at running back – "We have 14 linebackers and six running backs, so that's pretty easy math," he said – it adds a different dimension. "We don't really have a bigger back, a power back. He has a different skill set than our other running backs."
