BOZEMAN, Montana – It may be a new year and a different position, but Montana State's Troy Andersen enters 2019 with the same expectations for Troy Andersen.
Montana State's star who enters the 2019 season projected as a fullback on offense and a linebacker on defense was one of five Bobcats selected for the Preseason All-Big Sky Conference Team, announced Monday. Andersen's likely offensive role aligns him with Isaiah Ifanse, who set MSU's freshman rushing record last season, in the backfield. Fourth-year head coach Jeff Choate likes the possibilities.
"Troy is a dynamic player," Choate said of his star junior, "and it's incumbent on us as coaches to find ways for him to impact games the most. That may be as a running back in a two-back set, in a one-back set, as a tight end, as a receiver. He gives us opportunities and options." Andersen is listed as MSU's starting Sam linebacker entering 2019, as well.
Senior tackle Mitch Brott is the other Bobcat offensive player chosen for preseason All-Big Sky honors. Brott has started all 35 games during his time at MSU, and was Second Team All-Big Sky a season ago. Brott led an offensive line that helped MSU lead the league in fewest sacks allowed while compiling the third-most rushing yards in the conference.
"Mitch has been a reliable player for us," Choate said, "and a really good one. He plays with that edge, and helps set the tone for our offense. I look forward to Mitch having a great senior season."
Three Bobcats made the defensive squad, two from a secondary that returns intact in 2019. Cornerback Greg Filer III logged two picks and 10 pass breakups after transferring to MSU from the junior college ranks a season ago, and safety Brayden Konkol led the Cats with 93 tackles. Bryce Sterk finished second in the league in sacks and tackles-for-loss in 2018 as MSU's Buck, a hybrid linebacker-defensive end position, and earned preseason all-league honors as an outside linebacker. All three of MSU's defensive selections are seniors.
"One of our strengths this season is experience across the board," Choate said. "Having experience in the secondary is such a positive, and Munchie (Filer), Brayden, Jahque (Alleyne, at safety), Tyrel Thomas and Damien Washington have all had success as starters. Bryce Sterk is a dynamic pass rusher, and that combination, pass rush and coverage, gives you a chance for success."
