BOBCATS BY THE NUMBERS: 48 Days Before Kickoff, We Look at TE Ryan Davis
7/14/2019 3:00:00 PM | Football
Nearly 48,000 fans saw a memorable matchup between MSU and San Diego State in 1967
July 14: In addition to a quick look at players wearing the jersey number corresponding to the number of days remaining until Montana State's season opener at Texas Tech on August 31, Bobcats by the Numbers brings you another tidbit or two aligning with that number.
#48
Ryan Davis, TE: A funny thing happened to Ryan Davis on his way to a redshirt season at MSU in 2017 – he was too valuable for it. The Billings Skyview product – and famously, a Bobcat legacy – was so impressive that he was activated to the varsity after five games, and immediately contributed on special teams. The son of Doug, a one-time Bobcat gridder, and Debbie Davis, Ryan's brother Leo was a star for the Cats, another brother, Matt, played for MSU, and Steven was a Bobcat basketball player. The best moment of Ryan's freshman season came in MSU's win over the Grizzlies, when he logged a couple of tackles on kick teams, and as a sophomore last fall he showed well on kick teams and as a fourth tight end. But his real moment came this spring, when Jeff Choate said his progress was as impressive as anyone's. Davis enters his junior season as the projected starter at tight end.
48 (thousand) – Just under 48,000 fans saw the #1 San Diego State beat #3 Montana State (small-school rankings) in Balboa Stadium
It was the largest crowd ever to see the Bobcats play football to that point, 47,125, when the Cats and San Diego State got together to close the 1967 season. The top-ranked Aztecs won a defensive-oriented battle, 14-3, that captured imagination of small college football fans.
Chronology: George Vogt (1926), Art Dougan (1940), George Ahlquist (1941), John McLellan (1946-48), LeRoy Albrecht (1949-50), Ron Geraty (1953), Dick Tomcheck (1954), Darrell Hueth (1955), Bryan Compton (1980-81), Gary Sturm (1982-83), Frank Goettlich (1984-88), Ernie Boyd (1989), Trent Castleberry (1990), Shawn Kraft (1991-92), Neal Smith (1993-97), Cory Robinson (1999-00), EJ Cochrane (2001), Claude Boiteau (2002-04), Dustin O'Connell (2006-10), Conner Verlanic (2011-13), John Gonzalez (2014), Tanner Hoff (2015), Jacob Hadley (2016), Ryan Davis (2017-)
Other #48 Notes: In a program that took pride in defense and produced many, many brilliant players on that side of the ball, Neal Smith stands out. During his senior season, 1997, he rolled up 19 sacks, eighth-most in MSU history until that point, making three other tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He logged All-America and First Team All-Big Sky honors, and finished his career with 35.5 sacks, second-most in Montana State history.
