ALL-TIME BOBCATS: Mark Fellows

It's hard to imagine a season as good as Mark Fellows had in 1984
JUNE 15: Each day until Montana State's 2019 season opener the staff of Bobcats By The Numbers will offer a look at one of the players to make one of the school's all-time teams, in alphabetical order. On November 21, 1933, The Exponent announced 37 players selected by a panel of former players and coaches, divided into three teams that comprised Montana State's "mythical" all-time team. In 1969, the Billings Gazette's Norm Clarke conducted a poll to select the school's all-time team, and again in 2000 Bobcat Athletics and the Billings Gazette selected a third all-time team. The BBTN staff added players from the 21st century.
Mark Fellows, OLB, 1981-84
ALL-TIME TEAM: 2000 Billings Gazette Poll
HONORS: 1st Team All-Big Sky and All-America 1984, 1st Team All-Big Sky and Honorable Mention All-America 1983
A CLOSER LOOK: You almost have to create context to be able to understand Mark Fellows' career. Like, 'They threw it more then.' Or, 'Pass protections weren't as sophisticated as today.' But the simple fact of the matter is that Mark Fellows was one of the most dominant defensive forces ever to terrorize the Big Sky Conference. Playing an outside linebacker position akin to the current team's Buck position, Fellows racked up 79 tackles, nine sacks and a fumble recovery as a sophomore in 1982. One season later his 18 tackles included 16 behind the line of scrimmage. Then as a senior he set the gold standard for Bobcat football with 23 sacks and 30 for a loss. But even stats don't tell the whole story. The more complete story comes in that form – a story, told often by Bobcat head coach, about another defensive player who crowed during a defensive sideline session during a game late in 1984, 'They're running (the ball) away from me!' The terse reply from a coach followed. 'They're not running away from you, dummy, they're running away from Fellows.'
