From unheralded walk-on to All-America...
JUNE 9: Each day until Montana State's 2019 season opener the staff of Bobcats By The Numbers will offer a look at one of the players to make one of the school's all-time teams, in alphabetical order. On November 21, 1933, The Exponent announced 37 players selected by a panel of former players and coaches, divided into three teams that comprised Montana State's "mythical" all-time team. In 1969, the Billings Gazette's Norm Clarke conducted a poll to select the school's all-time team, and again in 2000 Bobcat Athletics and the Billings Gazette selected a third all-time team. The BBTN staff added players from the 21st century.
Bobby Daly, LB, 2005-08
ALL-TIME TEAM: 21st Century Addition
HONORS: 1st Team All-Big Sky and 1st Team All-America 2007, 2nd Team All-Big Sky and Honorable Mention All-America 2008.
A CLOSER LOOK: Bobby Daly arrived in Bozeman as an undersized walk-on linebacker in 2004 and after a redshirt season was pretty good on kick teams in 2005. But even that good start, even his bloodlines as the son of a former Bobcat All-America (Jay Daly), didn't prepare anyone for what was to follow. Daly's production exploded in 2006, when seemed to make every tackle for the Bobcats all season long. In reality he had 121, including 12.5 behind the line, and was a driving force in propelling the Bobcats to the FCS Playoffs. In 2007 he was among the players that helped make order out of the chaos of a summertime coaching transition from Mike Kramer to Rob Ash, and somehow was even better than the year before. He logged 136 tackles in two fewer (11) games and earned 1st Team All-America honors. He survived an injury-riddled senior season to finish his Bobcat career to finish fourth in Bobcat history in tackles (382) and eighth in tackles-for-loss (43).
