Kevin Retoriano was a brilliant defensive back who once returned a pick 83 yards
June 9: In addition to a quick look at players wearing the jersey number corresponding to the number of days remaining until Montana State's season opener at Texas Tech on August 31, Bobcats by the Numbers brings you another tidbit or two aligning with that number.
#83
Logan Kleinhans, WR: Logan Kleinhans showed positive signs on the scout team last fall and during spring drills. His blend of athleticism, speed and productivity could land him action at receiver this fall.
83 – Yards covered by Kevin Retoriano on an interception return against Idaho State in 2007, the longest return of a pick in Bobcat Stadium since the stadium's first renovation. He stepped in front of that Idaho State pass and dashed 83 yards for the touchdown to extend the Bobcat defense's string of producing points in three straight games. Retoriano was a brilliant defensive back for the Cats, making the unusual move from safety to cornerback during his career. He was a First Team All-Big Sky safety in 2008 and a Second Team All-Big Sky cornerback in 2009.
Chronology: Tom Hier (1956), Jim Rice (1957-58), Bob Durado (1959-61), Don Croner (1963), George Schoonmaker (1964-66), Bob Womack (1967-68), Kerry Pickett (1969), Bob Partee (1970), Doug Morrison (1971-72), Les Leininger (1973-76), Ron Ranieri (1977-80), Bryan Compton (1982-83), Paul Rogers (1986), Von Narcisse (1987), Kevin McGovern (1988), Jay Yahnke (1989), Jason Ward (1992), Marc Bragg (1993-96), Ryan Erickson (1997), Pat Carahasen (1999-2002), Demetrius Williams (2003), Mike Brown (2004-06), Colby Kinna (2007), Reil Cornelius (2008-10), Manny Kalfell (2011-13), Hunter Mahlum (2014-16), Devon Tandberg (2016), Kapili Livingston-Lopes (2017), Logan Kleinhans (2018-)
#83 Notes – One of Montana State's fine players in #83 was Marc Bragg, a former walk-on from Glasgow who was the starting punter while contributing at receiver. He caught 39 passes and averaged 37.9 yards per punt in three seasons as the program's starter. … Les Leininger was an All-America defensive lineman during the National Championship season of 1976. He was once asked on national television about playing eight-man football at Westby, and responded honestly, "They give you the ball and you run your ass off."
