A big man on campus in every way, Fred Chez starred on the gridiron for Ott Romney
JUNE 4: Each day until Montana State's 2019 season opener the staff of Bobcats By The Numbers will offer a look at one of the players to make one of the school's all-time teams, in alphabetical order. On November 21, 1933, The Exponent announced 37 players selected by a panel of former players and coaches, divided into three teams that comprised Montana State's "mythical" all-time team. In 1969, the Billings Gazette's Norm Clarke conducted a poll to select the school's all-time team, and again in 2000 Bobcat Athletics and the Billings Gazette selected a third all-time team. The BBTN staff added players from the 21st century.
Fred Chez, G, 1928
ALL-TIME TEAM: 1933 Exponent 1st Team, 2000 Billings Gazette Team
HONORS: 1927 – 1st Team All-Rocky Mountain Conference; 1928 – 1st Team All-Rocky Mountain Conference, Honorable Mention All-America
A CLOSER LOOK: Fred Chez followed an interesting path to Montana State. Originally from Ogden, Utah, according to one report he began his college career at Centre College in Kentucky, but once he arrived in Bozeman in 1926 he made quite an impact on campus. Chez was a physical education major who joined the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, was a member of Les Bouffouns social fraternity, which consisted of the top 10 senior men each year, and was junior and senior class president. He starred as a fullback in 1927, his first season of varsity football, but in 1928 moved to guard. He was even more impressive in that position, earning honorable mention All-America honors as a senior. Chez went on to a long, successful coaching career throughout the west.
FROM THE EXPONENT: "Fred graduated from Montana State College with the reputation of being one of the smartest and hardest hitting linemen of all. He was captain of the 1927 and a more consistent player could not be found. Although not as heavy as a line man should be made up in speed and fighting spirit what he lacked in beef."
