One of Montana State's best offensive linemen in history, Jon Borchardt also played in the NFL
JUNE 1: Each day until Montana State's 2019 season opener the staff of Bobcats By The Numbers will offer a look at one of the players to make one of the school's all-time teams, in alphabetical order. On November 21, 1933, The Exponent announced 37 players selected by a panel of former players and coaches, divided into three teams that comprised Montana State's "mythical" all-time team. In 1969, the Billings Gazette's Norm Clarke conducted a poll to select the school's all-time team, and again in 2000 Bobcat Athletics and the Billings Gazette selected a third all-time team. The BBTN staff added players from the 21st century.
Jon Borchardt, OL, 1976-79
ALL-TIME TEAM: 2000 Billings Gazette
HONORS: First Team All-America 1978, First Team All-Big Sky 1977-78, Second Team All-Big Sky 1976
A CLOSER LOOK: The list of candidates for Best Offensive Lineman at Montana State in the Last 50 Years is distinguished, and it probably starts with Jon Borchardt. Known for his quickness and intelligence – long-time Athletic Trainer Chuck Karnop said the microbiology major enjoyed quizzing Karnop during taping sessions – Borchardt budged into the starting lineup as a sophomore in 1976 and solidified an offensive line on its way to a national title. He never left, and by the time he was finished at Montana State as a three-time all-league choice he was ready for a long, productive career in the NFL. Originally from Minneapolis, Borchardt remains one of the revered names in Bobcat history.
FROM THE 1978 BOBCAT FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE: "To say that Jon Borchardt is one of the best tackles to ever play at Montana State could be an understatement. He might be the best. An intelligent player who has speed and quickness, Borchardt was All-Big Sky and honorable mention all-America as a junior last fall and heading into the 1978 campaign is considered by many to be the premier offensive lineman in the league. A 28-game starter going back to his freshman season, Borchardt earned second team All-Big Sky in 1976 as he helped the Bobcats to the NCAA Division II title. He has good strength and gained 11 pounds last winter."
