A look at some football memories that Thanksgiving taps into among MSU coaches
From its earliest days, America's Thanksgiving holiday and the game of football shared an unbreakable bond. Most people have, in some way, experienced the two national phenomena together. Here is a look at memories from some members of the Montana State football coaching staff…
JEFF CHOATE, Head Coach: "I remember going to my grandparents hous and we'd watch the Dallas Cowboys and then go outside and have a turkey bowl. We'd all get together, and when we were in Texas (the Choates lived in Austin for a time) we'd watch the Texas-Texas A&M game first, then my brothers and cousins would go outside and play football, and we'd get after it pretty good. Bloody lips, stitches, the whole thing. Then we'd go inside and get cleaned up, give thanks, and eat turkey and watch the Dallas Cowboys."
KANE IOANE: "My brother (Kip) is a Dallas fan, so I always cheered against them on Thanksgiving. (Kane is a Bears fan.) My dad had brought home some old shoulder pads and helmets, so we'd go outside and tackle each other before we ate turkey. Then we'd watch the Dallas Cowboys play, and whatever other game was on TV."
DeNARIUS McGHEE, who spent much of his youth in the Dallas area: "I definitely watched the Cowboys. I'm a 49ers fan, but we always watched the Cowboys, and I would cheer against them."
MATT MILLER: "I was always playing, we'd go right from the state championship game to basketball. Basketball tryouts were (the week of Thanksgiving). We'd get turkey day off, then back at it."
NATE POTTER: "We were always playing (while at Boise State). We were always in-season."
BRIAN ARMSTRONG: "I'd shoot a deer in the morning, then butcher a steer in the afternoon. Every year."
BOBBY DALY: "We always watched the NFL games, but I don't remember going out in the backyard. We'd do that on Super Bowl (Sunday), we'd have tackle football games without pads, wake up the next morning, your shoulders so damn sore. In 2006, when we went to the quarterfinals, we all went out to the Fletchers for Thanksgiving, then we played Furman that Saturday."
