Montana State claimed the Brawl of the Wild trophy for the fourth straight year on Saturday thanks to a dominating run game that pushed the Bobcats to a 48-14 win over Montana in Bozeman.
Isaiah Ifanse rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns and Logan Jones added 121 yards and another score as the eighth-ranked Bobcats gained 382 yards on the ground and 488 in total. This came against a Montana team that was ranked third in the nation and had yielded only 113 rushing yards per game. In addition, the Grizzlies (9-3, 6-2) had averaged 38 points per game, but had little success against the Bobcats (9-3, 6-2) as the sold-out crowd of 19,827 was at full roar all afternoon.
The Bobcats are expected to receive a first-round bye in the upcoming FCS playoffs. The post-season schedule will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 24.
On UM's very first offensive play, MSU's Derek Marks recovered a fumble which turned into an 8-yard touchdown run by Kevin Kassis. Tristan Bailey's field goal and Jones' touchdown made it 17-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the score ballooned to 24-0 on a wide receiver sweep by Tyrone Marshal. Marcus Knight sandwiched two touchdown runs for UM around Ifanse's first touchdown as the score at the half was 31-14. With injured Troy Andersen watching in street clothes from the sidelines, Ifanse and Logan shared the running load with 21 and 19 carries, respectively.
Bailey's 30-yard field goal was the only third-quarter points, before Ifanse added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to keep MSU coach Jeff Choate perfect at 4-0 against Montana.
Led by Amandre Williams and Bryce Sterk, who combined for 4.5 sacks, the MSU defense held the Grizzlies to just 195 yards through the air and only 46 yards on the ground, well below their season average of 459 total yards a game. Besides Marks' fumble recovery, MSU's Brayden Konkol had an interception while the Bobcats played error-free ball. Josh Hill led MSU with nine tackles.
