A letter from Montana State Director of Athletics Leon Costello
Dear Bobcats,
Two years ago, the 20-year facilities masterplan was announced envisioning the future of Bobcat Athletics. Phase I, including the Bobcat Athletic Complex and Academic Excellence Center, became the top priority because of the benefits it will provide the entire athletic department; student-athletes, coaches and staff. Earlier today we announced that the $18 million fundraising goal for Phase I has been completed. This is the largest fundraising campaign in Bobcat Athletics history and would not have been possible without you. Thank you!
Phase I creates a new home for Bobcat football; a 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art operations center which includes coaches' offices, locker room, team/meeting rooms, nutrition station, and enhanced training areas. It also includes additional space for sports medicine services including rehab and recovery areas.
The Academic Excellence Center will be relocated into renovated space vacated by the football staff on the south concourse of the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. This center is approximately 3,500 square feet and includes offices, group and individual study areas, as well as private space for tutoring services.
Speaking of announcements, you will want to be in your seats for a special event announcement during the first quarter of the Homecoming game. Great things are happening at MSU! I'd also encourage you to arrive early and keep your 'eyes to the sky' for a special addition to our pre-game activities.
On Friday, November 1, we will host the second annual Blue and Gold Gala, a dinner auction benefiting the Bobcat Club Annual Scholarship Fund. Last year, more than 400 Bobcat fans attended the inaugural event generating over $130,000 directly benefiting student-athlete scholarships. You can register for the 2019 Blue and Gold Gala here. If you have an item to donate, click here. If you can't make it to the event, but still want to donate or bid on silent auction items from our mobile bidding site, click here. Every dollar makes a difference in the lives and experience of our student-athletes.
The fall sports season is off to a great start and the Bobcat football and volleyball teams are both off to their best starts since the 2012 season. Bobcat football has an overall record of 5-1 and 2-0 in Big Sky Conference play while Bobcat volleyball sits at 8-6 and 4-1 in Big Sky Conference action. Now is a great time to get your tickets for upcoming home events. Help us continue to make Bobcat Stadium and Shroyer Gymnasium the best home atmospheres in the country. Click here to purchase your tickets today.
It is also important to note that standing room only tickets for the Cat/Griz football game will go on-sale to the general public Monday, October 14 at 10 a.m. Visit msubobcats.com/tickets or call 406-994-CATS.
Additionally, MSU cross country teams have had some great results, including the MSU Cross Country Classic, and are preparing for the Big Sky Championships on November 2 at Northern Colorado with their final meet on October 19 at Indiana State. The MSU tennis teams continue their fall season while the women's golf team concluded its fall season this past weekend.
While the fall season has undoubtedly been exciting, the winter sports are just around the corner and 2019-20 basketball season tickets are on sale now. The Montana State women's basketball team returns a group of five seniors and the men's team brings plenty of excitement under first year head coach and alum Danny Sprinkle. Click here to order your basketball season tickets today.
You can get your first look at the Montana State basketball teams in person on Friday, October 18, when we host the inaugural Late Night at The Brick event! You can click here for more information about the event which is free to the public.
Also this winter, don't forget that MSU, along with Bridger Bowl and Crosscut Mountain Sports Center, will host the 2020 NCAA Skiing National Championships March 11-14. This is a great event to showcase our athletic department, MSU campus and Bozeman community and to witness the best skiing in the country. For more information on the 2020 NCAA Skiing Championships, click here.
With this week's homecoming game nearing a sellout and traffic expected to be heavy, please be aware of obstructions around Bobcat Stadium. Grant Street is closed for renovations to Romney Hall and Kagy Street will closed between 11th and 7th Avenue at 10 a.m. Please see our gameday traffic map here, our parking and tailgating guidelines here and go to the campus' new AM station 1610 for more information. Don't forget, the Clear Bag Policy is still in effect. With the weather starting to cool down in Bozeman, I'd like to remind you that your coats and blankets do not need to fit inside your clear bags. Make sure to be prepared and get into the stadium early to avoid long lines.
In the athletic department we strive to continually improve our fan experience. While some areas are easy to address, others can be difficult for many reasons. Your feedback is vital to our success as we work to make all our Bobcat Athletic events enjoyable and exciting for everyone. We have asked our football game attendees to take a brief survey after each game to evaluate the gameday experience and to give specific feedback. We have used each of those surveys to address some areas immediately and identify longer-term projects to tackle in the off season. Please click here to see the latest video of how we are listening to you and addressing your concerns.
I am looking forward to seeing so many of you during this week's Homecoming festivities. Montana State University is a special place and that is because of the people associated with it. Enjoy your time on campus in and around the Bozeman community. Bring your Blue and Gold spirit on Saturday and continue to make Bobcat Stadium the best home field advantage in the country.
