Tarbath paces Bobcat Nordic Squad in RMISA Opener

Tarbath, a product of Anchorage, Alaska covered the course in 15:16.7 to post 34 points for the Bobcats.
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Montana State junior Emma Tarbath opened the Nordic portion of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association season placing fourth in the five-kilometer freestyle at the Colorado Invitational to guide the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon.
Tarbath, a product of Anchorage, Alaska covered the course in 15:16.7 to post 34 points for the Bobcats. Also scoring for MSU were Kathleen O'Connell, 23rd, 16:08.7, and Jordi Floyd, 28th, 16:57.2. Kelly Koch finished 30th overall in 17:02.6.
Utah's Guro Jordheim captured the women's freestyle title in 14:27.9.
The Montana State men were led by Karsten Hokanson in the 10K race. The senior from Salt Lake City, Utah, placed 14th with a clocking of 27:58.0. Also producing points for MSU were Eli Jensen, 18th, 28:07.4, and Ti Donaldson, 24th, 28:33.7. Ty Godfrey finished 25th in 28:34.9.
New Mexico's Kornelius Groev won the men's freestyle in 26:35.6.
"We had an uncharacteristically rough showing, with the exception of an outstanding effort by Emma Tarbath," said MSU Nordic coach Matthew Johnson. "We are looking forward to Sunday. The mass start classic format should be an advantage for us as we all have high expectations of where we should be on this circuit."
After five events Utah sits atop the team standings with 410 points. The Utes are followed by Denver 400, Colorado 330.5, Alaska Anchorage 305, MSU 285, New Mexico 270.5, Westminster 138, Alaska Fairbanks 100, Wyoming 51 and Colorado Mountain 38.
On Friday, the women's slalom was completed before the men's races were postponed due to poor racing conditions. The men's slalom events will be made up on Jan. 19.
Stephanie Gartner guided the Bobcat women in slalom placing eighth with a two-run total of 1:51.62. Rounding out MSU's top three were Mia Henry, 13th, 1:54.51, and Beatrix Lever, 21st, 2:02.10.
Jocelyn McCarthy, who recorded the second fastest opening run in 51.60, did not finish her second race.
Utah's Roni Remme won the event in 1:48.90.
The Nordic classic races will be held on Sunday in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
