Bobcat Academic Story: Ellen Brooks

Cross country's Ellen Brooks has excelled in MSU's Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering and is a member of the Bobcats' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
Junior student-athlete Ellen Brooks has little free time and she doesn't want it any other way.
Despite being on the cross country team at Montana State, and serving as the secretary for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Brooks sports a 4.0 GPA studying chemical engineering.
Brooks was named to the Big Sky's Winter All-Academic team last season.
MSU's Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering is one of the top-rated engineering schools in the country and appealing to any high school student. Picking which field of engineering to study can be one of the hardest elements of attending the college.
"I always loved calculus and chemistry in high school," said Brooks. "I figured [chemical engineering] would be a good route to go, but then I was also drawn to environmental and medical application you can do with chemical engineering."
The Missoula, Mont., native is not familiar to a lackadaisical lifestyle. Her work ethic is one that is necessary to excel in both academics and athletics.
"I think [excelling in academics and athletics] is something you just end up doing once it's a routine," said Brooks. "I don't have much time outside of athletics or academics. That being said, I don't really see myself doing anything different. I like this college experience."
It takes a special kind of individual to be able to handle the rigors that come with being a student-athlete. Brooks attributes her success to truly caring and having a genuine interest in her studies.
"I think a lot of it is I enjoy learning," said Brooks. "I'm interested in the material, I'm learning. I'm interested in understanding why it works rather than just memorizing it and figuring it out for the purpose of a homework assignment or a test. I think that interest is probably what helps me do my best."
Brooks' extracurricular activities and accolades didn't start when she came to Bozeman. She was in the band all four years at Sentinel High School, playing the trumpet. Brooks also made it into National Honor Society, a nationwide high school organization with selection based on academic achievement, leadership, service and character.
Brooks' mind is not yet set on post college aspirations. With such an impressive track record, it makes sense to keep an open mind. But, she continues to train and study as she takes on more of the college experience.
"I'm working in a lab that studies biomechanics and biology of arthritis," said Brooks. "[Working further with arthritis] could be something I see myself doing in the future."
Brooks and the Montana State Bobcats' cross country teams open up their season September 15 hosting the MSU Cross Country Classic at Bridger Creek golf course.
