Miranda Boager enters her senior year at Montana State looking to cap off a great career as a student and spirit squad member, while she gets ready to become an elementary school teacher.
Boager, majoring in elementary education, has been recognized multiple times on Montana State University's Dean's List. The dance team member spends plenty of time preparing for game day, but also is focused on her post-college aspirations.
Montana State provides a great opportunity to aspiring teachers, having them work directly with students while getting to learn from teachers. This is a requirement to graduation, while also giving students a sense of what they will be doing with their lives.
"I want to teach first grade," said Boager. "Last semester, I was in a first-grade classroom and this semester I'm in practicum two and I got placed in a first-grade classroom again. I think first grade is sort of my calling."
Not everyone begins college having specific goals for their career. Almost no one decides on their career by the time they finish first grade. For Boager, having an influential teacher helped her decision and she's stuck by it.
"I knew I wanted to become a teacher when I was in first grade," said Boager. "My first grade teacher, Mrs. Carr, was kind of my big influence. I just wanted to be like her when I grew up. She was a really big role model for me. I've always worked with kids my whole life, so when I was a senior in high school, I came to the deciding factor of what I wanted to do and (now) I'm graduating this May."
The Miles City, Mont., native hasn't strayed much in her life. Growing up less than 300 miles from Bozeman, she's always considered herself a Bobcat. Boager always loved dancing, starting when she was 3 years old.
"I always wanted to be a part of the spirit squad," said Boager. "That was kind of my deciding factor, I always wanted to be on the spirit squad so, I chose Montana State."
Performing in front of Bobcat nation is a special moment for every member of the spirit squad. Being able to get the crowds engaged and excited is paramount for successful sport teams at MSU. Spirit squad members perform for most sports and have to love engaging with a crowd.
"I love dancing for all sports," said Boager. "I love crowd engaging and just being in front of a crowd, it's really fun. If I had to pick a favorite it'd probably be football. (There's) a lot more people and a lot of excitement."
Dancing is far from the only aspect of the spirit squad that intrigued Boager. She got to be a part of a team these last four years and make relationships that will last a lifetime.
"I just love that we're all a family," said Boager. "They're my family away from home so I have a lot of good relationships with all of my teammates. it's really comforting knowing that if I need something, they're all going to be there for me."
Boager will be wrapping up a great student career as a Bobcat this year and while be continuing to be a Bobcat when she becomes a teacher.
You can see Boager and the spirit squad perform throughout the 2018-19 athletic year. The MSU spirit squad will be at the Montana State volleyball game against Sacramento State next on Saturday in Shroyer Gymnasium.
