MSU Football Begins to Gear up For First Fall Camp Scrimmage

After the sixth day of Fall Camp, the Bobcats are starting to see clearer picture of the team's pecking order
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Bobcats were eventually going to hit the proverbial "wall" at some point during Fall Camp practices. Head coach Jeff Choate said usually it occurs on day three or four of camp, but the MSU football team pushed through six days as the Bozeman summer heat starts to hit its apex.
Thursday's practice ended up being a day Choate described as by and large, "going through the motions." It's something he doesn't expect to see again in the near future with the team's first scrimmage looming this upcoming Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.
"That's not going to get us where we need to be," Choate said of the work done on MSU's home turf. "We've got to rebound tomorrow even though we're only in helmets. We've got to have a crisp day and then obviously Saturday is a big day for us in terms of setting kind of a depth chart."
Choate said the day did bring out a few different situations that the team can learn from. With another walk through session planned for the evening and a helmets only practice on Friday, the Bobcats can refine some of the things that came up. That includes coming ready for each day of work.
"We challenged them yesterday on 'hey we're going right back to pads again,'" Choate said. "We actually talked about going full pads today because I was concerned about this. Sometimes it's just a mindset. It doesn't matter if you take off a piece of equipment, maybe the mind isn't quite as honed in as it needs to be. I think mental and physical fatigue, a little bit of heat, all of those things come into play."
Now that Thursday's practice is out of the way, the focus starts to turn even more towards the opening scrimmage scheduled less than 48 hours away. Most of the team's plays have been installed and the process has shown that some are ahead of others.
The emphasis ahead of Saturday will be to figure out the menu, as Choate described, that the offensive and defense will be working with in regards to play calling during specific portions of the game.
Another point of importance for the Bobcats that's beginning to take shape is MSU's depth chart. While competition won't be done after this Saturday, there will start to be a clearer picture at several positions for the Bobcats.
"I'm trying get out of it healthy," Choate said of Saturday's scrimmage. "I think we're going to have a pretty good exchange. Probably get somewhere in that 80 to 85 play range and let the young guys have a little bit of a go at the end. Then really set that pecking order."
