Bobcats Battle through 'Dog Days' During Day #4 of Preseason Camp

Installation of offensive and defensive schemes continue
BOZEMAN, Montana – By Jeff Choate's admission, the dog days arrived at Montana State's preseason camp on Monday.
"You can see that mental fatigue, coupled with the physical fatigue, going through the grind here having these guys here for 12 hours a day four straight days," Choate said. "This is kind of the dog days. If you push this first five, six days it does get better."
Preseason camp continues to ramp up on Tuesday when the Bobcats don full pads for the first time. But Choate doesn't expect things to look drastically different. "It's our first full pad day," Choate said, "but it won't be much different. Probably Saturday's the first day that's going to be different for them."
Saturday is marks MSU's first scrimmage, the day Choate and his staff gets "to look at some guys" and particularly to seriously "decide the pecking order at quarterback so we can give (the starter) and (the backup) more reps." That process reaches its pinnacle when the offensive scheme is installed, and Monday's practice saw more strides toward that end. "We got some of our gap schemes, some of our (quarterback) runs in, and that puts more pressure on the defense. I continue to see strides."
Still, with the dog days descending on MSU's preseason camp, Choate said managing his student-athletes mentally and physically remains on top of his priority list. "Like I tell (the players) all the time, it's going to be hard, it's going to hurt, but you're going to survive," he said. "I saw a couple guys that I thought tapped out a little bit yesterday in practice but I was proud of some of those young guys that came out and participated and got better today. That shows that they're resilient, and that's what you've got to be to be able to survive. Like I told them, we're going to make it harder every day and it was harder today on them mentally because we had a lot of new install, but it was a good day, a really good day."
