There were a number of really good players that built MSU into a championship program a couple decades ago without enjoying that first title... but we remember!
August 24: Bobcats by the Numbers takes a look at current and past Bobcats whose jersey numbers correspond to the number of days remaining before Montana State opens the 2018 football season against Western Illinois in Bobcat Stadium's annual Gold Rush game on August 30.
#6
Justin Cauley, RB: After a brilliant senior season at Venice (California) High School, Justin Cauley looks to boost the Bobcat offense in his first season. Cauley rushed for over 1,500 yards with 22 touchdowns a season ago, and is seen as a multi-use player who could excel in many different roles.
Spotlight – Lamonte Bell: L-Bell, as he was known fondly in the Bobcat program, was part of a couple important phases of Montana State football. First, as a Denver product, he was part of an important recruiting outreach into the Centennial State. He followed luminaries such as Matt Engelking and arrived with standouts such as John Taylor, at a time when Cliff Hysell's staff was looking for non-traditional but accessible talent bases. Bell was part of the excellent 1997-98 teams that challenged in the Big Sky, was among those that bottomed out in 1999 and 2000, and helped lead the resurgence as one of only nine seniors in 2001. He started at corner as a junior and at safety as a senior, and his electric play on the field was bolstered by a steady, pleasant presence off the field.
Chronology: Archie Eikrem (1927), Joseph Harrar (1930), Robert Long (1930), Jay Leland (1931), Jack Heringer (1934), Frank Strong (1937), Mark Eibner (1982), Tim Kostroski (1983), Doug McQuarter (1984), Mark Page (1985), Shaun Shahan (1986), Mike Iverson (1987), Shaun Shahan (1988), Sean Hill (1989-93), Todd Buchanan (1994-95), Ramsey Alexander (1996), Lamonte Bell (1997-01), Brandon Roosevelt (2002-05), Greg Palmer (2006), Josh Lewis (2007), Gianni Carter (2009-10), Heath Howard (2008-12), Kurt Davis (2013), Cody Cleveland (2013-14), Desman Carter (2015), Ben Folsom (2016-17), Justin Cauley (2018-)
Other #6 Notes: Sean Hill, Montana State's brilliant cornerback and return man from 1989-93, is the only player Bobcat to ride jersey #6 to the Bobcat Athletics Hall of Fame. An All-America as a senior, Hill played several seasons in the NFL and has become an educator in Miami in the years since.
