CATS IN CAMP: Day #11 - Jeff Choate's Mind Unchanged After Scrimmage Film Review

MSU's third-year head coach liked what he saw, specifically from the offense, on Saturday
BOZEMAN, Montana – Jeff Choate knows what he knows, and that didn't change much after reviewing video of Saturday's first scrimmage of preseason camp.
"I think sometimes that first scrimmage maybe confirms more that you know than change your mind about things," Choate said, acknowledging that the quarterback position remains under evaluation. "I think we know Travis and Troy are probably co-ones right now, and we're figuring out how all the pieces fit together. I did think Tucker had a good day, especially from where he was at in the spring. He showed some moxie, got us out of a call that was screwed up one time and executed well, took us down the field on a nice drive."
While implementing a scheme and a philosophy – "Our DNA," Choate calls the mindset – that emphasizes the run game, the Bobcat offense remains diverse and multiple. Reinforcement of that came Saturday. "I think what I learned is that we've got a lot of options on offense," he said, while emphasizing that much remains before the nuances of this year's team emerge.
"We've still got to figure out how it all comes together," he said. "Travis and Troy right now, clearly, are sharing the reps with the ones. Tucker is taking most of the wto reps. If we were to play tomorrow I think you'd see both Travis and Troy play, and I think you'd see Tucker as the backup guy. That's the starting point for us, but there's a lot of camp left. If Tucker keeps doing some of the things he's doing that could change, if Casey Bauman and Ruben Beltran get their chances, who knows?"
On the other side of the ball, Choate wants his defensive unit to ratchet up the intensity when it enters Bobcat Stadium on Saturday for the final scrimmage of the summer. "The problem I felt like we had on defense was the wrong mindset. It wasn't that didn't do some good things. The last couple times we've gone into the stadium for practice I don't think the defense has brought the right energy level."
