
Montana State’s Herbert & Philippova Selected as Big Sky Scholar Athletes

Mitch Herbert and Angelina Philippova are chosen as Montana State's representatives on the Big Sky's Scholar Team
OGDEN, Utah – The Big Sky Conference announced its 2017-18 Scholar Athlete Award winners on Thursday, June 5, with Mitchell Herbert (football) and Angelina Philippova (women's tennis) recognized as Montana State's award recipients.
The two seniors were selected based upon their athletic and academic performances during the past academic year.
Herbert completed his collegiate career with several highlights on and off the field.
On the gridiron, Herbert served as a team captain as a senior as he led the Bobcats with 41 receptions and 497 yards receiving. He hauled in five touchdowns during the 2017 season to finish his Bobcat tenure second in program history with 21 touchdown catches. He also finished fifth all-time in receiving yards with 1,874.
The Eugene, Ore., native graduated with a 3.86 grade point average while earning a degree in cell biology and neuroscience.
He was honored for his efforts in the classroom with a variety of accolades. Herbert was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American, FCS ADA Academic All-Star and National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society honoree. He was also one of 58 student-athletes in all levels of NCAA competition to be a recipient of a Post-Graduate Scholarship from the NCAA.
Philippova completed her Bobcat career with a strong senior season. Her 11-8 singles ledger was the best on the team and led to honorable mention all-Big Sky Conference accolades. She finished 8-3 against Big Sky opponents, which included a seven-match win streak. Philippova previously earned honorable mention status from the Big Sky as a sophomore.
A native of Astrakhan, Russia, Philippova graduated with a 3.95 GPA and a business finance degree from Montana State University. She was a four-time All-Big Sky Academic Team selection.
To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), be a member of the graduating class and/or have complete their last year of intercollegiate athletic eligibility, have completed at least two years of intercollegiate competition and be a letterwinner in their respective sport.
