Bobcat Hall of Famer Ron Ueland Passes Away

All-America linebacker leaves legacy of pride in his state and alma mater
Montana State football legend Ron Ueland, a two-time All-Big Sky linebacker who earned All-America honors as a senior in 1973, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday at his home near Butte. He was 65.
A star athlete at Butte Central, including the Maroons' 1969 state championship team, Ueland was an anchor of the Bobcat defense as starting linebacker from 1971-73. Sonny Holland, another Bobcat legend who coached the team from 1971-77, credited the successful recruitment of Ueland with pivoting the Cats into an amazingly successful period. Ueland helped lead the Cats to the 1972 Big Sky Championship, and his brothers Don and Dan played on MSU's 1976 Big Sky and NCAA Division II National Championship team.
Ueland earned All-Big Sky honors as a junior and senior for the Bobcats, landing honorable mention All-America kudos as a senior in 1973. He also captained the Bobcats that season, and in the following spring earned his business degree. A spectacularly successful career, which included more than a quarter-century in agriculture-related fields. He also spurred several start-up businesses in his hometown of Butte, including reviving the Metals Bank building.
Playing with future NFL standout Bill Kollar, a defensive end, Ueland was credited as the team's 'top tackler' who played linebacker 'as well as you'd want it played' in Montana State's media guides from that era. He was known for his range and toughness, and Holland said that combination and his pride in Bobcat football combined to make him emblematic of the great MSU teams of the 1970s.
